10 February 2008 - "Younger siblings"

This post is dedicated to anyone out there with a brother, sister, or God forbid, both!

When you’re trying to have a lie-in on your one day off, they’re there. Screaming, wailing, complaining, sobbing, banging. How annoying is that? You get one day off in seven days and after being practically forced to have five hours sleep for six days straight, when that final free day comes it is ruined by a child wailing in their room, which is conveniently placed next door to yours, it is enough to drive an already unstable person into a rocking, bawling wreck. Why is it that they can never appreciate the fact that you are next door to them, sleeping fitfully, buried beneath sheets which needed changing two years ago?

But I suppose it’s not entirely your annoying sibling’s fault, but your parents who knowingly shoved you into the room next to their other spawn whilst they remain snoozing smugly in their much larger, much quieter room. It was them who brought the child into this world and undoubtedly brought them up having secret lessons on how to annoy you. It was them who laughed when the child played practical joke on you or even hit you but if you ever retaliated then you would be punished in a way which would be too harsh for Adolf Hitler.

Discrimination, surely? For the fact that they are younger than you they get put on a pedestal and are never in the wrong but this is often far from the case.

But we all grow up and when your younger sibling simply becomes your sibling thats when you can truly learn to appreciate each other.

Ehhh.. that’s how I always feel.. My brother’s only three years younger and now in Middle School. He is starting to get a little more punished, but that punishment always somehow ends up punishing me. He also tends to get away with more stuff. Hopefully he’ll gow up. But I don’t see that happening.

Younger siblings are the worst, aren’t they? I have a little brother and a little sister - My brother is old enough to not be so annoying anymore, but my sister is still attached to my hip whenever I see her.

Thankfully I’ve never lived with them so I don’t have to deal with them waking me up, but I assure you if they ever did, they probably wouldn’t have lived to see their next birthday.

    Good luck to you. :P

Heh, that is exactly why I insist on having my own bedroom. And I always lock the door. I’m very touchy about my privacy. My door is always closed. :P

I used to be that kind of little sister towards my siblings until I actually grew up in middle school. Now these days I annoy my sister by asking for rides to places and borrowing her clothes without permission. xD

My other sister who is 31 on the other hand is like that though. I’m not even kidding. Except when she comes over to my room, she has to take a 4 mile drive from her (unkept) condo and bother me at the weirdest times of the day/night. She is basically like the adult version of what you have listed in your blog.

I was the younger sibling in my family, but I’m sure *I* was never annoying to my older brother…LOL Now that we’re grown, we’re good friends, so you’re definitely right on that point…it gets better. :)

LOL, I’ve definitely felt the same — and all my siblings are only a year or two (or three) behind me! I am sure that I was like that with my holder siblings though…but eh, I was a cute kid =D

Wow, I am so happy that I don’t have a younger sibling. I am actually the youngest, but I am a far cry from young, so I don’t have to put up with things like that. It sounds like it really sucks, though.

Well, my younger sister is 17 so she tends to not scream, wail, or sob so much anymore… She does still complain and bang though, so I definitely appreciate what you’re trying to say here.

I have both a younger brother and sister. Luckily there weren’t that annoying. I was Miss Bossy so they did what ever I told them. If I told them to shut up, they shut up. If I told them to leave me alone, they left me be for hours. It was great. Of course, now they don’t pay attention to anything I say since as they are much older and the big sister effect has long worn off. *sigh*

I do have a sister and a brother, but I’m the youngest. They still irritate me though, but when I think about it I guess it would be lonely if I didn’t have any siblings. I wish I was the middle child though, I don’t know but I don’t like being the youngest because I don’t like being overprotected, neither do I want to be the eldest because of all the responsibility.
