1 April 2008 - "Deutsch ist schwul"

In just over one weeks time, I will be expected to recall pages and pages of my German speaking answers for a GCSE exam. I’m just wondering how anyone can think that it is possible to learn over thirty question answers (each of which are at least a paragraph long), a two page presentation and presentation questions?

I personally find it ridiculous that they assess how good you are at a language by how well you can memorise the answers to questions such as “what would you do if you had a million pounds?” or “what did you do last weekend?”. Sure, when learning languages, memory is a key skill but when if it ever came to a real life conversation with an actual German person, you would have to make up your answer on the spot not recall your answer from memory. And I seriously doubt that upon visiting Germany, I would ever be asked what I would do if I had a million pounds.

However, the ranting of a fourteen (soon to be fifteen!) year old girl on her little blog on the internet isn’t about to change things… so I guess I’d better go and revise. Sigh…

10 February 2008 - "Younger siblings"

This post is dedicated to anyone out there with a brother, sister, or God forbid, both!

When you’re trying to have a lie-in on your one day off, they’re there. Screaming, wailing, complaining, sobbing, banging. How annoying is that? You get one day off in seven days and after being practically forced to have five hours sleep for six days straight, when that final free day comes it is ruined by a child wailing in their room, which is conveniently placed next door to yours, it is enough to drive an already unstable person into a rocking, bawling wreck. Why is it that they can never appreciate the fact that you are next door to them, sleeping fitfully, buried beneath sheets which needed changing two years ago?

But I suppose it’s not entirely your annoying sibling’s fault, but your parents who knowingly shoved you into the room next to their other spawn whilst they remain snoozing smugly in their much larger, much quieter room. It was them who brought the child into this world and undoubtedly brought them up having secret lessons on how to annoy you. It was them who laughed when the child played practical joke on you or even hit you but if you ever retaliated then you would be punished in a way which would be too harsh for Adolf Hitler.

Discrimination, surely? For the fact that they are younger than you they get put on a pedestal and are never in the wrong but this is often far from the case.

But we all grow up and when your younger sibling simply becomes your sibling thats when you can truly learn to appreciate each other.

4 February 2008 - "Rumours"

I am aware that there was problems with the comment form but they’re all sorted out now. If there are ever any problems with my website, don’t hesitate to contact me. Admin(at)ohsarah.com.

Back onto the blog topic, that being rumours. Only last week, I was on the receiving end of some embarrassing rumours myself but today people maliciously spreading rumours has reduced one of my friends to tears and I have had enough of these silly things.

I do not get the point of them. Why spread something which may or may not be true? Is it really that fun watching someone squirm with embarrassment,  be upset or even cry? What good could possibly come from gossiping with your friends about someone who you might not even talk to? And even if you do talk to them, if they’re your friend, why would you want to do that to them? It’s absolutely disgusting seeing one of my friends cry as a direct result of several people not being able to control their twittering mouths.

You wouldn’t like it if someone spread stories about you around the school. You wouldn’t like it if everywhere you went and everyone you talked to, that story got brought up. You wouldn’t like it knowing that everyone knows about the mistake you made, or if everyone believed something that wasn’t true.

Gossiping and spreading rumours go hand in hand and in the end, they only cause misery. Do you like to gossip? Have you ever spread an un/truthful rumour about someone? And if so, did you regret it?
